Cassina – Italian family company with tradition

The Italian furniture company Cassina was founded in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, initially under the name Amadeo Cassina, before it was shortened to Cassina we all know today. Until the war the two brothers concentrated primarily on wooden tables and later also on sofas, entirely hand produced. During the 1950s production became industrial and Cassina began to commission designers to develop collections that could be produced serially. This early, close cooperation with designers and architects, in connection with first-class manual carpentry and technologically highly developed machines, established Cassina's raeputation, and saw the manufacturer become a co-founder of the so-called "Bel Design" of the post-war period. With this, Cassina pioneered a development that made Italy the pioneer of good form and thus went down in modern design history. For over 90 years, the company has been creating high-quality design classics, whose long-lasting quality have defined the name Cassina. Although the natural materials wood and leather have a high degree of individuality, thorough material testing guarantees a uniform standard that only ensures the processing of absolutely high-quality materials. And today, the upholstered furniture is produced directly at the company's headquarters in Meda – the joinery is only a few minutes away by car. As things, more or less, always were. All individual parts are manufactured in series using the latest technology and assembled and checked by hand.

Design classics and contemporary design

The company history of Cassina is closely linked to the designers of Cassina furniture from the 1950s onwards: Gio Ponti, for example, furnished the first class category of the legendary Andrea Doria cruise ship with Cassina designs and thus helped the company to create a floating showroom. Ponti's Supperleggera chair, which today is one of the absolute icons of Italian design, was advertised by Cassina with the story that it was thrown out of the window of the company headquarters on the second floor, landed undamaged and even sprung back. Today the Cassina portfolio is divided into two large collections. The Cassina Maestri line which features key works and re-editions by important architects and designers in modern design history, including works by Charlotte Perriand and Le Corbusier, Gerrit Rietveld, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and many others. Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, for example, shaped the image of Cassina with their characteristic sofas and armchairs from the LC Collection. Cassina Contemporanei brings together works by a younger post-War generation of designers who have transferred the legacy of classical modernism into a contemporary context. In doing so Cassina brings together a who's who of the international design scene: designers such as Philippe Starck, Jaime Hayon or Patricia Urquiola, who has been Art Director at Cassina since 2015.

Current developments at Cassina

In 2017 Cassina celebrated its 90. anniversary. For a company with such a historic, significant and precious legacy, part of the ongoing challenge is to preserve it, without losing sight of the present and to look to the future. In the words of Cassina's Managing Director Gianluca Armento, it is about "looking back to move forward". Designs such as the Ciprea plastic armchair by Tobia Scarpa from 1968 or Philippe Starck's multifunctional Lazy Working Sofa from the 1990s have already represented this combination of know-how, tradition, experiments and innovative new ideas. Patricia Urquiola, who has been Creative Director at Cassina since 2015 and who designed the conversion of the company's headquarters in Meda, also takes an avant-garde, innovative approach, but also proves to be a perfectionist when it comes to designing classic, modular seating landscapes. In 2020 Cassina presented its new collection with Cassina Perspectives 2020 with a focus on sustainability and well-being. New solutions for living rooms and dining rooms have been added in context of the company's integrate approach: for the first time, these include re-editions from the I Maestri line by the Italian architect and designer Ico Parisi and, with Cassina Perspectives at Night, a completely new collection for the bedroom with furniture designs by Patricia Urquiola and Rodolfo Dordoni.
